UTM builder and templates

Add UTM parameters to a short link's destination, and save the combinations you reuse as templates.

The UTM builder adds utm_source, utm_medium and the other UTM parameters to a link's destination URL, so the visits it sends are labelled by campaign in your analytics. Templates save combinations you use often, like "Twitter launch", so you fill them in with one click.

Open the builder

In the Create link or Edit link form, click Add UTM parameters. For your first link, the builder is already open.

Fill in the fields

FieldBecomesExample
Sourceutm_sourcetwitter
Mediumutm_mediumsocial
Campaignutm_campaignjune-launch
Contentutm_contenthero-image
Termutm_termanalytics

Every field is optional and up to 200 characters. Leave a field empty to skip it.

Check the preview and save

Destination with UTM shows the full URL visitors will land on. Click Create link or Save.

Muro adds the parameters to the destination URL itself. Other query parameters in your URL are kept. If the URL already has a UTM parameter with the same name, the value from the builder replaces it.

Change or remove parameters later

When you edit a link, the destination URL already contains its UTM parameters, and the builder fields start empty.

  • To change a value, fill in that field. It replaces the value in the URL.
  • To remove a parameter, delete it from the Destination URL field.

How UTM parameters show up in Muro

When a visitor lands on a site that runs the Muro script, Muro records utm_source, utm_medium and utm_campaign, and shows them in the dashboard's UTM Breakdown panel and in filters. utm_content and utm_term stay in the URL for other tools, but Muro's tracker doesn't record them. See UTM tracking.

Muro Links' own click analytics count clicks on the short link. They don't break clicks down by UTM parameter.

UTM templates

Save a template

  1. Fill in at least one UTM field in the link form.
  2. Click Save as template.
  3. Give it a name, like "Twitter launch", and click Save. You'll see Saved as "Twitter launch".

Template names are up to 50 characters and unique in your account, ignoring case.

Apply a template

In the UTM section of the link form, open Templates and pick one under Apply a template. It fills in every UTM field. Fields the template doesn't set are cleared. You can still edit the values before saving the link.

Delete a template

Open Templates, click the trash icon next to the template (or highlight it and press Delete), then confirm Delete template. Links you already created with it keep their UTM parameters.

Templates can't be renamed in the app. To rename one, delete it and save it again, or use the UTM templates API.

Limits

You can save up to 100 templates per account, on every plan. Templates belong to your account and are shared with your API key.

Verify it works

  1. Create a link with Source test and Campaign docs-check, pointing at a page on a site that runs Muro.
  2. Open the short link in a private window.
  3. In the project's Dashboard, open the UTM Breakdown panel: test appears as a source.
