Get started with Muro Links

Create tracked short links on muro.ink, share them anywhere, and see who clicks.

Muro Links turns any URL into a short, tracked link like https://muro.ink/launch. Use it for social posts, newsletters, bios, QR codes on print, or anywhere you can't add a tracking script. Every click is counted, with where it came from, the country and the device.

Links are on every plan. Open Links in the top nav to get started.

A short link lives on muro.ink. When someone opens it, Muro records the click and sends them on to your destination URL with a standard redirect. The visit itself happens on your site, so if your site runs the Muro script, it's counted there too.

Links belong to your account, not to a project. One link can point anywhere, including sites that don't use Muro. Team members you've invited to a project don't see your links, and you don't see theirs.

Open the form

Go to Links and click Create link (or Create your first tracked link if you have none yet).

Fill in the basics

  • Title: a name for you, like "PH Launch". Required, up to 200 characters.
  • Destination URL: where the link should go. It must start with http:// or https://, and be up to 2,048 characters.

A preview shows your short link as you type.

Add the extras you need

All of these are optional:

  • Tags: group links for filtering and analytics. Up to 10 per link. Type a new name to create a tag on the spot. See Tags and tag analytics.
  • Comments: private notes, such as why the link exists or which campaign it belongs to. Only you and your API keys can see these. Up to 2,048 characters.
  • Customise slug: choose the part after muro.ink/ yourself. See Slugs.
  • Set expiration: make the link stop working, or redirect elsewhere, at a set time. See Link expiration.
  • Add UTM parameters: tag the destination with Source, Medium, Campaign, Content and Term, or apply a saved template. See UTM builder and templates.

Save

Click Create link. The link works right away. Click its short URL in the table to copy it.

To change a link later, open the ⋯ menu on its row and choose Edit. You can change everything except the slug.

Which destinations are allowed

Muro refuses destinations it can't safely redirect to: localhost, private network addresses, and muro.ink itself (to prevent redirect loops).

Slugs

The slug is the part after muro.ink/. If you don't choose one, Muro generates a random 6-character slug, like kEYaz0.

To choose your own, click Customise slug when creating the link:

  • Letters, numbers, - and _ only, from 1 to 64 characters.
  • Slugs are case-sensitive: Launch and launch are different links.
  • Some words are reserved and can't be used, such as login, verify, account, billing, support and muro.
  • All Muro users share muro.ink, so a slug someone else is using is taken. Try a variation.
  • A slug can't be changed after the link is created. To use a different slug, create a new link.

QR codes

Open a link's detail page and click QR to download a 512 × 512 PNG QR code of the short link. Because the code points at the short link, you can change the destination later without reprinting it.

Safety checks

Muro checks every destination, and every expiration fallback URL, against Google Safe Browsing when you save. A flagged URL is refused with This destination was flagged as unsafe and can't be shortened.

Active links are also re-checked regularly. If a destination becomes unsafe later, the short link stops redirecting. If you think a link was flagged by mistake, or you want to report a Muro link that's being abused, email support@muroanalytics.com.

The top of Links sums up every link in your account for the selected period:

  • Clicks: clicks across all your links, with the change against the previous period. This is the charted metric (bar or line).
  • Active Links: your live links, against your plan's limit.
  • Top Referrer: the site that sent the most clicks.

Below that, Top Links, Top Tags and Top Referrers panels rank the period's clicks. Click a link or tag to open its analytics.

The table lists Title, Short URL, Destination, Tags, Clicks and Created. Click the Clicks or Created header to sort the current page. Clicks counts the selected period. Use Tags → Filter by tag to show only links that carry any of the tags you pick.

The time picker offers the same ranges as the dashboard, without Live. Link analytics use UTC days and hours, shown by a UTC badge on the chart.

Click a link's title to open its page. The header shows the title, tags, the short URL (click to copy), its expiration if set, and your notes. Below:

  • Total Clicks: all-time clicks on this link.
  • Clicks: clicks in the selected period, with the change against the previous period.
  • Top Referrer: the site that sent the most clicks in the period.
  • A clicks chart, plus Locations (Country, Region, City), Devices (Device, Browser, OS) and Referrers panels.

What counts as a click

  • Every redirect counts, including redirects to an expiration fallback URL.
  • A link that has expired with no fallback, or was flagged, doesn't count clicks.
  • Referrer is the website the click came from. Many apps and email clients don't send one, so those clicks show as Direct.
  • Location comes from the network edge, and device, browser and OS from the visitor's browser. Muro doesn't store IP addresses.
  • Clicks aren't filtered for bots. Link-preview crawlers (chat apps, social networks) can add a few clicks when a link is first shared.

Open the ⋯ menu on the link's row and choose Delete, or click Delete link at the bottom of its detail page, then confirm.

Deleting permanently disables the short link. Anyone who opens it gets a "not found" page, and the slug becomes free to reuse, by you or anyone else. Deleted links can't be restored.

Deleted links don't count. If you reach your limit, existing links keep working, but you can't create new ones until you delete some or upgrade. See Plans. Managing links from code needs the Team plan or a trial: see the API.

Verify it works

  1. Create a link and copy its short URL.
  2. Open it in a private window. You should land on your destination.
  3. Back in Links, refresh the page. The link's Clicks goes up within about a minute.
