Sessions & visitor journeys
Follow individual visits page by page, see where each visitor came from, what they clicked and where they left.
The Sessions page lists individual visits to your site, newest first. Open one to see its journey: every page in order, how long the visitor stayed on each, the custom events they sent and the goals they reached. Use it to understand the numbers on your dashboard, for example why visitors from one source bounce or what converting visitors do first.
Sessions are part of the Team plan and the free trial. On Starter, the page shows "See every visitor journey with Team" with an Upgrade to Team button. It works retroactively: upgrade and you see journeys for your existing data. On a shared project, the owner's plan decides. See Plans.
The sessions list
Open Sessions in the top nav. The header reads "Individual visitor journeys · last 90 days · visitor identities reset daily".
Each row is one session:
| Column | What it shows |
|---|---|
| Started | When the session began, in the project's timezone. |
| Visitor | An anonymous label such as Visitor #3FA9C1. |
| Source | The referring site, else the utm_source, else Direct. |
| Entry page | The first page of the session. |
| Pages | How many pages were viewed. |
| Duration | Time from the first event to the last. |
| Device | Mobile, tablet or desktop. |
Rows can carry a badge: Active for a session that's still going, Bounce for a session with one pageview.
A session is one browser tab's visit. It ends after 30 minutes without activity, or when the tab closes.
Pick a range and refresh
Use the time picker to choose the range (the default is Past 7 Days; Live isn't offered here). Sessions go back 90 days. Click Refresh to load sessions that started since you opened the page. At the bottom, Load more fetches older sessions.
Filter sessions
- Converted shows only sessions that reached at least one goal. Bounced shows only one-page sessions. Pick one or the other.
- Add a filter for Page, Referrer, Country, Device, UTM Source, UTM Medium, UTM Campaign or Goal. Type the exact value (a two-letter code such as
USfor country), or pick a device or goal from the list, then click Add. Filters show as pills you can remove. - Show sessions without pageviews includes sessions that only sent custom events.
Filters are saved in the URL, so you can bookmark or share a filtered list.
A visitor's sessions
Click a visitor label to see every session from that visitor. The panel shows the visitor's latest device and country, how many sessions they had and when they were first seen.
Visitor identities reset daily for privacy, so you only see that visitor's sessions from the same day. Sessions from other days can't be linked to them. This is by design: Muro never stores a long-lived ID for anyone. See Privacy.
The session journey
Click a session to open Session journey. The top shows the visitor, Started, Duration and Pages, plus Active for a live session and ↑ Converted if it reached a goal.
Below that, each page is a step, in order:
- Entry and Exit mark the first and last pages.
- A bar and a time show how long the visitor stayed on each page. The current page of a live session shows "now".
- Custom events sent on that page appear under it, for example
signup. - Goals reached on that step are highlighted with an ↑ and the goal's name.
- Shopify purchases, if you've set up Shopify, appear as a purchase with its amount, and a Refunded or Cancelled badge where that applies. The amount shows only if you can see revenue: owners always can, and members can when the owner turns on Let project members see revenue.
Query strings
If a page URL had a query string, a toggle on that step reveals it. Parameters whose names suggest a secret, such as token, key, password, email, code, session or auth, show as [redacted], and so does any value shaped like a login token. Even so, avoid putting personal data in your URLs. Muro stores the path and query string as your site sends them.
Live sessions
A session that's still going shows Active. Close and reopen it, or click Refresh on the list, to see the newest steps.
Older sessions
Sessions are kept for 90 days. An older session shows "This session is no longer available (sessions are kept for 90 days)."
Jump in from the dashboard
Some insights link straight to Sessions, for example "See where these visitors go on your site" on a traffic surge. The Goals panel on the dashboard also leads here: filter Sessions by a goal to see the visits that reached it.
Verify it works
- Open your site in a new tab and click through two or three pages.
- Open Sessions and click Refresh. Your visit appears at the top with an Active badge.
- Click it. The journey lists the pages you visited, in order.
